Living the Dream
Living the Dream
I have a industrial walking foot sewing machine that I have used to perform countless repairs throughout the boat. I bought this machine (REX607) off Ebay over four years ago. I believe they may have become so popular that stock is now difficult to find. It is a knock off of the Sailrite-Ultrafeed, in fact there numerous versions of similar design online under different names. I have had great luck with the REX607 but if I was to go find one today I might just go buy a Sailrite Ultrafeed. These have slightly better manufacturing quality but it would mainly be for availability and guaranteed parts compatibility although Sailrite parts so far seem to be the same on the REX607.
In any case, any more you spend on the machine (within reason) doesn't matter much as you will spend much more on materials and forget all about what you paid for the machine in the first place. Besides, by doing your own repairs you save so much anyway but this is always not about cost savings. It often about availability and time duration to solve a problem. A good canvas repair resource is hard to secure in a timely manner these days as with any good trade.
Sailrite does provide some pretty good demonstrations that can be helpful when starting out. I still buy the bulk of my supplies from Sailrite as they really have a great selection.

I've had this pressure washer for 3 years and it works great. I keep it on the boat for cleaning and sometimes clean dirty transient docks beside our boat if necessary.
Great fishing reel, a real must having the depth counter. Comparing the reel counter to the depth sounder keeps the hook from getting snagged on the bottom. I'm sure this has saved me from losing fishing tackle.
Installed this ladder under the swim platform 4+ years ago. Nice not having anything on the top surface of the platform to stub toes on.
Crushing cans saves so much space on the boat, especially on the long summer trips.
These motion switched lights have worked great in the otherwise dark galley cupboards. I use rechargeable batteries in them. The motion detector switches the light on and has auto-off.
The "Whizzy Wheel" works great for removing vinyl lettering and pin striping. Very quick and no messy chemicals. I used this on a cordless drill.
The Kill-A-Watt meter is perfect for measuring 120 VAC loads and logging KWh over time. Great for measuring boat refrigeration equipment to calculate battery time when at anchor.
The Smart Plug works great. I recommend using it on a new shore cable for maximum life cycle.
I use the Morningstar Tristar 60 MPPT. It is more expensive but premium quality and get maximum yield. I do feel you get what you pay for with solar controllers. No internal fans and very robust.
I have had a REX 607 for 4 years now. A real work horse! I have redone the the bimini top, side curtains, upholstery, windows covers, equipment covers. It is nice to always have this resource available. It is an attainable skill to pickup and well worth it.
I bought an inverter similar to this about 4 years ago. While this type of inverter is not best for refrigeration equipment (inductive loads) it has held up well at a fraction of the price of a low frequency inverter. It is a pure sine inverter so it should not cause any damage to inductive motors.
These are the best LEDs I have found so far. While they are not dimmable, the light tone, design and quality are great. Due to shape and design they look similar to halogen in that the light source is in the center of the fixture. Highly recommended.
